UNGLAZED AND GLAZE COLOURS

Below is a list of the glazes and finishes available.

Every effort is made to keep colours consistent however these are handmade pots fired in small batches and variations creep in. Some of the glazes are even designed to vary with thickness of application and position in the kiln, so that every piece is individual.

Other colours may be available so email or phone if you have a special requirement.

New colours are being added all the time so please check periodically.

CHESTNUT                                                                                                                                 This glaze is quite stiff and stone like.  It is good for trees with pink flowers or white flowers. It harmonises well with trident maple, field maple and most deciduous trees with orange/yellow tones in the leaf in spring or autumn. It is soft and even

GREY/GREEN                                                                                                                                                           This glaze has a greenish satiny surface.  It is suitable for mountain maple, where it enhances the colour of young green wood and the older silvery bark, and offsets the reddish leaves in spring and autumn. The glaze is very variable and changes dramatically with slight variations in thickness and firing temperature. It will often show greyish patches, which sometimes are flushed with pink. Occasionally a pot will flush a beautiful peachy pink all over, but this is rare and uncontrollable. It is a very useful glaze and goes well with many tree types and styles because of its sophisticated colour.

CLOUDY BLUE GREEN                                                                                                            This glaze has a beautiful smooth satin surface and has a cloudy effect in its colouring. On the pot edges it will break to show something of the pot body colour. It can be used for a variety of tree species. It is perhaps best with fruiting and flowering bonsai and those with thick shiny leaves. It looks very good on deep pots where its colour variations can be best seen.

CRACKLE WHITE                                                                                                                                                  This glaze is fairly dry and stone like. The glaze colour is affected by what else is in the kiln with it, and slight variations in temperature. The white is sometimes delicately tinged with warm grey, pink or buff., but there is often a fine tracery of grey crackle lines. A good choice where a light coloured but subtle glaze is needed.

KANTON                                                                                                                                    This glaze is basically a rich dark blue that breaks to a graphite/black where thick. This break up stops the blue being too strong. The glaze appears quite thin and shows off the lines of the pot well. The surface is smooth and satin like. The colour works well with many tree species. It is very good on almost any pot and is particularly good on trays, suibans and accent pots. It shows off white and yellow flowers well.

KOREAN BLUE                                                                                                                                                       This glaze is a cool pale translucent blue. The body clay can be seen slightly through the glaze and in bright sunlight the colour is enhanced by refracted light within the glaze. It has a smooth satin surface. It is most useful where a cool sophisticated look is required in the bonsai/pot combination. It combines well with many varieties of Japanese maple refreshing the green of new leaves and acts as a good contrast to the orange/red of varieties like ‘Deshojo’. It also works well with Korean hornbeam and Chinese elm

BLUE GREY                                                                                                                               This glaze is applied quite thickly and has a dryish stone like appearance. It will break slightly on hard edge corners to a grey/brown that enhances the pot shape. It works well with most deciduous species and is good with many fruiting and flowering bonsai. It is particularly good with pink, yellow and white flowers. It works well on small and large pots.

STORMY BLUE GREY                                                                                                                                            This glaze is a darker version of Pale Blue/Grey. Again it tends to be dryish and stone like. The colour is very good with Japanese beech, red varieties of maple, Chinese elm and most flowers. It is especially good for trays with deciduous forests. It works well on all sizes and shapes of pots.

TURQUOISE                                                                                                                             This is a variation of the Cloudy Blue/Green glaze where it is applied more thickly. The resulting colour is a quite intense turquoise blue. Again suitable for fruiting and flowering bonsai. But because of its intensity needs careful handling. The tree needs to be of a strong design, hence it is also very good on small and accent pots.

HARVEST                                                                                                                                                                         A warm biscuit colour glaze breaking toasty on edges. Dryish surface. Good for trident maple, hornbeam etc

IMPERIALYELLOW                                                                                                                        This is a glaze that works well with pots under 30cm in length and is good on rectangular pots and pots with strong edges. Smaller trees often benefit from strongly shaped and strongly coloured pots. This glaze works well with trees with red flowers or white flowers or trees with blackish bark like Prunus spinosa [Blackthorn]. The glaze itself is satiny and slightly transparent and needs to be used quite thickly.

SHINO WHITE                                                                                                                                                       This glaze is a strong shiny white very similar in appearance to the Japanese ‘Shino’ glaze. The surface is slightly textured, as the glaze needs to be quite thick. However the glaze is not ‘dead’ like many shiny white glazes. It is probably best on smaller more angular pots. It is very good for accent plantings and where a cool ‘underlining’ is used for a summer planting.

PALE GREEN                                                                                                                            This is a smooth glaze that breaks brownish on edges. A fresh colour that suits delicate trees.

WARMGREY                                                                                                                                                               A soft grey, satin like surface. A nice restrained colour. Good to show off white/pink flowers.
